At the first time we arrived there, we wondered why the weather was so hot, even more than in Indonesia. Some of us also really surprised when we saw some men that weren’t wearing shirt or rolled up their shirt to the chest. But now, we know it was because the weather and the culture also.
Guilin feels hot (it’s summer!) and it often rains, but the climate and activities are such that the rain often feels refreshing and adds to the enjoyment. The temperature is much like Central China’s, but you can spend your time at the rivers to be cool. Just bring an umbrella every time!
When we did not have any activity, us and other students from other countries decided to explore Guangzhou by ourselves. Actually, that was also the beginning of our friendship. Guangzhou has one of the most comprehensive metro system in China. It has a total of 8 lines serving the city centers, suburban areas, Baiyun Park, and the Airport. But the system and the services are quite simple and easy for tourist.
I really felt the changes that happened to me especially with the way we think by having friends from other countries. I discovered and witnessed the world with diverse opinions, different views on religion and politics, distinctive outlooks in life, etc. I began to see the world through their eyes and I began to understand things. I learnt a lot from them, and I hope that they learnt from me as well. There would always be an exchange of knowledge every time.
Besides that, we also met some Chinese teacher. They were very nice to us, it was more like a friend to us than just a teacher. They taught us nicely, shared knowledge, and their experiences about China. Even sometimes we were threw some jokes and laughed together, they were not be angry. We are grateful to meet them as well.
Lastly, we want to say thank you to Binus University for giving us chance to join this program. We also want to say thank you to South China University of Technology for arranging this program. We learnt much about other culture and got knowledge from other students as well as the international experiences that can increase our intercultural competence.
